- opines
-
Carbon compounds produced by crown galls and hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes respectively. They are utilized as nutritional sources by Agrobacterium strains that induced the growth and are, in some cases, chemoattractants. Chemotactic activity seems to be specific for plasmids carrying the relevant opine synthase gene. Octopine, nopaline, mannopine and agrocinopines A and B are examples.
